A Jazz Trio
Berklee’s New Vertical Campus
A vertical campus for Berklee that brings theater, teaching, and rehearsal together through shared circulation and spaces for exchange with the city.
Context
Berklee’s culture of jazz provides a model for bringing different activities together without erasing their individual character. The proposal asks how a compact vertical campus can support both focused musical work and interaction with Boston’s public realm.
Approach
Theater, educational, and rehearsal spaces are organized as distinct components connected by shared rooms and circulation. Plans and sectional models develop the relationships between these programs, making movement through the tower part of campus life.
Program as a trio
Piano, guitar, and drums provide an analogy for the three program groups. Each retains a distinct spatial character, while their connections allow teaching, practice, and performance to contribute to a shared campus experience.
Campus and city
The tower extends Berklee’s public realm upward. Music library, dining, collaboration spaces, student association, black-box theater, and main theater are connected by visible circulation and shared rooms that invite exchange between students, musicians, and the Boston public.
